What are Medicare Supplement Plans?

Medicare Supplements (also known as Medigap policies) are sold by private insurance companies. They help pay for some of the costs that Original Medicare does not cover. Medigap plans are standardized, which means that policies cover the same basic benefits regardless of which company you purchase them from. You must have Part A and Part B to purchase a Medigap policy.

What is the difference between Parts and Plans?

Medicare “Parts” refer to Part A (hospital), Part B (outpatient/doctor), Part C (Medicare Advantage) and Part D (prescription drugs). The term “Plans” refers to the various Medigap policies you can purchase, such as Plans A-D, F-G, K-N.

Where can I receive care with Original Medicare and a Medigap policy?

With a Medigap policy, you can see any provider across the country who participates in the federal Medicare program (you may also hear this referred to as providers who “accept assignment”). You do not need referrals for to see a specialist with Original Medicare.

Medigap plans

If you have Original Medicare, once you’ve met the Part A and/or Part B deductibles, Medicare pays for 80% of approved medical expenses, and you are responsible for the other 20%. In our experience, the most popular Medicare Advantage plans are Plan G and Plan N.

Plan G pays for 100% of the costs you are responsible for, with the exception of the Part B deductible. Plan G also pays for 80% of foreign travel emergency care (up to plan limits).

Plan N also pays for 100% of the costs you are responsible for, but with a few more exceptions. Plan N pays 100% of the Part B coinsurance, but you must pay a copay of up to $20 for some office visits and up to $50 for ER visits if you are not subsequently admitted to the hospital. You are also responsible for 100% of the Part B deductible. Plan N also pays for 80% of foreign travel emergency care (up to plan limits).

Plan F was a very popular plan in the past, but you can’t buy a Plan F if you were new to Medicare on or after January 1, 2020.

Plans A, B, C, D, K, L, and M are also available for purchase.

Are prescription drugs covered?

No, prescriptions are not covered by Medicare Supplement policies. You will need to purchase a separate Part D plan for your prescriptions.
